ILLEGAL DUMPING
Illegal dumping is more prevalent in Denton than you might think. However, there is absolutely no justifiable reason for it, especially when you consider that there are so many resources available to get rid of unwanted items.
The landfill will take any City of Denton residential bulky item free of charge Monday through Friday from 7:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. and on Saturday from 7:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon. The landfill is closed on Sunday.
What is a bulky item?
- Appliances are bulky items, eg. stoves, ovens, microwaves, refrigerators (without freon), air conditioners (without freon), trash compactors, etc., are considered bulky items.
- Furniture is a bulky item, eg. televisions, couches, chairs, mattresses, box springs, tables, desks, etc., are considered bulky items.
What is not a bulky item?
- Household trash is not a bulky item and is not taken free of charge at the landfill, but is picked up twice per week at curbside as a part of your regular Solid Waste service.
- Yard waste (tree limbs, grass clippings, leaves) is not a bulky item and is not taken free of charge at the landfill, but is picked up at curbside every Wednesday as a part of your regular Solid Waste service. Limbs must be cut in 4' lengths and stacked in one bundle with the cut ends toward the curb. All yard waste is recycled to make mulch, compost and soil products for gardening use. Denton's Dyno Products can be purchased at the City of Denton Water Reclamation Plant at 1100 Mayhill Road on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. At the reclamation plant, the product is sold by the cubic yard and you load your own! Dyno Products are also sold pre-bagged at Harpool's Nursery and Dennis' Farm Store.
- Electronic equipment is not a bulky item and is not taken free of charge at the landfill. It is considered to be trash. However, there are several businesses and non-profits in Denton that will take electronic items and recycle them for you!! For more information, see the 3Rs at www.kdb.org.
- Used tires are not bulky items and are not taken free of charge at the landfill. There is a $5 fee for car tires and a $7 fee for truck tires. A list of local tire dealers that take used tires at a discounted rate is available at www.kd.org.
How do I prove that I am a Denton resident?
- You must bring a copy of your driver's license, even if it does not list your current Denton address.
- If your driver's license doesn't list a current Denton address, you must bring a copy of a current utility bill to show your current Denton address.
- If you live in an apartment that is 'All Bills Paid,' you must bring your lease agreement to show your current Denton address or a verification letter from your apartment management.
Special Information about Appliances with Freon:
- If you bring appliances containing freon to the landfill (eg. refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners), you will be required to pay a $50 fee for the Solid Waste Department to contract out the freon evacuation service.
- If you had the freon evacuated from the appliance, you will need a sticker and a receipt from an accredited Heating, Venting and Air Conditioning (HVAC) contractor.
- Freon is a hazardous chemical that negatively impacts our air quality. Don't illegally dump freon-based appliances!
