2011 Great American Cleanup (GAC)
Frequently Asked Questions
Date: Saturday, March 5, 2011
Time: 8 am to 1 pm
Where: Denton Civic Center (see Google map)
I want to be assigned to a cleanup site near my friends, can you do this?
We work to accommodate as many volunteer requests as possible. However, the earlier you preregister, the more likely it is that we will be able to place you in your desired location.
Our group is very large, can you accommodate us in one cleanup spot?
Yes. We have special locations set aside for large groups. However, these tend to fill up quickly, so preregister early!
We have younger children in our group, can you accommodate us?
Yes. There are special safety considerations when young children are volunteering, so we set aside "child friendly" cleanup sites for these groups.
I need to get a form signed for community service hours, can you do this?
Yes. Our volunteer coordinator maintains the community service hours for each event, and she would be happy to verify your hours.
Can I get my friend's community service verified for them?
No. You must have the community service verified individually.
Am I guaranteed a t-shirt?
Unfortunately, no. While we do our best to provide a t-shirt for each volunteer, growing members of GAC participants are presenting a challenge financially. We hope that everyone will get a t-shirt in their preferred size, but this t-shirts are available on a first come, first served basis to preregistered groups who choose to pick up their supplies early.
Can I sign up if I'm not part of a group?
Yes. We have many citizens and students that wish to volunteer but are not part of a large group. We assign small groups/individuals to the same cleanup sites so that no one is out there alone. This is a great opportunity to make new friends while helping beautify your community!
I am concerned about safety because I am volunteering alone/I am volunteering with children/I've never volunteered before...will you tell me what to watch out for?
Definitely! You will receive training and information prior to going out to your site. We want this to be a safe, happy day for everyone participating!
When/how do I pick up supplies?
If you preregister, supplies can be picked up at the KDB office at 1117 Riney Road (see Google map) on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 or Thursday, March 3, 2011. Otherwise, supplies will be available the day of the cleanup at the Civic Center.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
A smile! If you are picking up supplies early, please know the name of your group and the name of the person that registered your group. For your own safety, please be sure to wear closed toe shoes on the day of the cleanup.
What if I'm disabled/elderly, can I still help?
Absolutely! We have many cleanup sites that are easily accessible. Also, we have many volunteer opportunities at headquarters that are not as physical.
Can I register onsite?
Yes. Individuals and groups can register at 8:00 am on the day of the cleanup at the Civic Center.
I've registered a large group and our numbers are drastically different from when I signed up, should I let you know?
Please! The sooner we know about changes in group size, the better we are able to accommodate the volunteers. If you have fewer volunteers coming that you've expected, that's okay. If you have many more, that's okay too...we'd just like to plan for them!
Can my Scout Troop get patches for participating in the GAC?
Yes! Please call (940) 349-8738 with the estimated number you will need.
What can I do with my old television set?
Televisions and computer monitors can be collected curbside for recycling (if you are a City of Denton resident) by calling Customer Service at (940) 349-8700. A fee of $20 per device will apply. Nonresidents may take their televisions and monitors to the Landfill, where they are accepted for recycling. Televisions, computers, and other devices with a screen will be charged $15 per device at the Landfill Electronics Drop-off Center.
What can I do with my old computer?
Televisions and computers contain hazardous materials, such as lead or mercury. These items should not be put into a garbage truck or the Landfill. The City of Denton encourages residents to utilize Computer Manufacturer Take Back Programs for old or broken computers.
What can I do with my old tires?
Normally, tires are accepted at the City of Denton Landfill. Fees are available on the Landfill website. However, ONLY on March 5, 2011, the Landfill will collect tires for recycling for no charge. Limit of 4 - 20" tires per vehicle.
What can I do with my old batteries?
The Home Chemical Collection Program provides proper disposal of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW). This includes batteries. All Denton residents, in single-family homes and apartments, receive at-home collection of HHW. To schedule a collection, call Customer Service at (940) 349-8700 between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm., at least one day prior to your trash recycling/yardwaste collection day.
