Volunteers: Thank You for Making the 2008 Great American Cleanup a Huge Success!
On Saturday, March 1st, Keep Denton Beautiful (KDB) hosted the 2008 Great American Cleanup, a citywide litter cleanup and community beautification event. In yet another year of record turnout, 870 volunteers removed almost 360,000 pounds of trash from roadways, waterways, hiking trails, and community areas throughout Denton. Community volunteers, including Boy and Girl Scout Troops, City Council members, local university groups and others, volunteered their time and effort to clean an amazing 100 linear miles of Denton in just 4 hours!

Implemented locally by KDB, and directed at the national level by Keep America Beautiful, the Great American Cleanup is the nation's largest litter cleanup and community beautification program. Each year, millions of volunteers participate in the Great American Cleanup to clean and beautify tens of thousands of communities across the U.S.
Volunteers make the difference!
"Litter" Known Facts
Litter \'li-tər\ noun
Misplaced trash and other solid waste. If it's in a trash can, it's garbage. Anywhere else, it's just litter.
Don't Mess With Texas
Think one piece of litter doesn't make that much of an impact? In fact, studies show that litter:
- attracts more litter
- never stays put — both human and natural processes move litter from our streets into our neighborhoods, waterways, and public spaces
- impacts our community's quality of life, public health, and economic vitality
Events like the Great American Cleanup help reduce the impact of litter and other misplaced solid waste on our community. However, achieving a truly clean and beautiful city is not just about picking up litter; we need to start at the source. Each and every citizen must take responsibility for preventing litter before it starts. This means:
- properly disposing of all trash
- reusing or recycling items whenever possible
- educating friends and family on why they should do the same!
Take advantage of the City of Denton's solid waste and recycling services to properly dispose of your household trash, recyclables, chemical products and other waste! Visit the following City of Denton Solid Waste Department web pages to learn more:
