Yard of the Month Award Winner

In an effort to catch yards around Denton at their best, KDB's Yards of the Month will now be selected for the months of April through October. We will begin accepting nominations again for 2008 Yards of the Month on March 1, 2008.

Before you nominate a yard...

Each month, volunteers with Keep Denton Beautiful select a residential Yard of the Month winner for each area in Denton. Additionally, a Business Yard of the Month and Watersmart Yard of the Month are also selected on a citywide basis.

So you think your yard or your neighbor's is a good candidate for Yard of the Month? Look for these criteria:

Yards need to be located in Denton city limits
Landscapes must be attractive and pleasing to the eye (plants with a variety of heights and textures)
Landscapes must be well-groomed (grass mowed, property edged)
Buildings, fences, porches, and patios need to be in good repair
Consideration may be given to attractive art pieces, potted plants, birdhouses, etc; but natural landscape will be the primary focus.
Businesses must maintain trash and cigarette receptacles at entrances & exits
All winners must be free of litter, junk, debris. They cannot have appliances or indoor furniture on porches or patios.
All winning properties must be free of junked or inoperable vehicles and have no parking on the lawn

Criteria for Watersmart Yard of the Month also include:

Yards must use water-efficient plants (visit www.txsmartscape.com for tips)
Yards should have less grass lawn and more native and adapted plants
The presence of wildlife such as birds, butterflies, and squirrels indicate a healthy watersmart yard
Trees standing on ground-cover beds are more water efficient than those on grass alone
Some yards may have a multitude of pathways and beds. Pathways contribute to water conservation; they enhance visual texture while minimizing the area that requires water
