Annual Tree Giveaway
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can I only receive one free tree?
Limiting each household to one free tree enables us to help you and your neighbor.
Didn’t I see someone with more than one tree in their truck last year?
Yes, you may have. We now allow up to eight trees per vehicle. However, that means there needs to be proof of residency for each household.
I live in Denton County but not in the city of Denton limits. Do I still qualify?
Sorry, but no. Keep Denton Beautiful's programming covers the area within the city of Denton limits. We are a local non-profit, and we try to ensure that we use our resources in the most focused and effective manner possible for the city of Denton community.
Will you run out of trees this year?
It's very possible. This event has grown in popularity over the years. You may pre-register for your chosen trees while they are available. If we run out of trees, we will open a waiting list.
If you do run out, will you order more?
No, we will not order more trees once the event has concluded. We have a limited budget for purchasing trees each year and offer the most we can. If you miss out this year, we put this event on each year in October!
Which trees are best for our North Texas climate/soil conditions/etc.?
All of the trees selected for the event are native to this area which means they have spent generations adapting themselves to this climate. Download the 2011 Tree Info Form to learn more about the trees and their characteristics.
Which trees will give me the best fall color?
Download the 2011 Tree Info Form to learn more about the trees and their characteristics.
Which trees will grow the fastest?
Most of the trees selected for the event are large, hardwood shade trees. They have a longer lifespan which means they grow more slowly. Usually, the slower the tree grows, the longer it lives. This is a good thing for our urban forest! Two of the tree options are understory or ornamental trees. They will grow a little bit faster, but will not get as large or live as long. The two ornamental species offered this year are Texas Redbud and Mexican Plum.
Can I volunteer to help out next year?
Yes, please join us! This event has grown in popularity with volunteers as well as folks who want to plant trees at home. You may volunteer (individually or with a group) by emailing aimee@kdb.org
Can I take trees home for my Neighbor/Mother/Brother/Cousin?
You can take trees home for someone else if you also have a copy of their proof of residency with a limit of up to eight trees per vehicle. Remember, one tree per household.
How will I know when to pick up my tree?
Once you have pre-registered, you will receive an intial confirmation email with the tree species we are able to give you. As the event get closer, you will receive a 2nd confirmation email with an assigned time slot to pick up your tree (usually a 30 minute window) on the day of the event - October 22, 2011. If you are unable to pick up your tree during your time slot, simply reply to the email and request a different time slot. NOTE: ALL trees must be picked up on October 22, 2011. There will be morning and afternoon time slots available. If you cannot pick up a tree on October 22, 2011, please do not register.
Why was I turned away this year?
We will turn away people for two reasons: 1) You’re not a resident of the city of Denton (or you forgot your proof), or 2) You did not preregister for an available tree.
What proves I'm a city of Denton resident?
We base this on official document from the city or state which shows your household address. Examples: Utility bill or driver's license.
This event is put on by the City of Denton, right?
Actually, no. Keep Denton Beautiful (a stand-alone 501(c)(3) non-profit) coordinates and hosts this event each year. Several City of Denton departments provide invaluable support for the event through their sponsorships and partnerships with KDB.
Why can't I load my own trees into my vehicle?
Because we see so much traffic at this event, we provide volunteers to help load trees. This keeps the line moving more smoothly and more quickly. We're trying to minimize the amount of car idling occurring during this event. We also want to keep everyone attending the event safe from traffic mishaps.
