People in the US are migrating from rural areas to larger cities. More people live in an urban (developed) setting than ever before.

The Urban Forest is a collection of all the trees around us in our developed cities. Urban Forestry includes the planting and care of trees in parks, residential property, along streets, business property, and in other urban settings.

We can improve our Urban Forest by managing the tree assets we have. We can remove dead and dying trees. We can prune healthy trees to help them grow in harmony with structures around them. We want to walk on shaded paths, but not into a limb. We want to mow the grass without injury to self or equipment. In developing our cities, many trees existed where homes or businesses now occupy the land. Encouraging new tree plantings is one of the best ways to enhance our Urban Forest.

At KDB, we want to encourage and be part of:
  • Healthy Trees
  • Habitats for Wildlife
  • Successful New Tree Establishment
We accomplish this through three yearly events

What is arboriculture?
Arboriculture is defined as the cultivation of trees and shrubs, this includes the planting and care of individual trees and trees in small groups.

What is an arborist?
An arborist is an individual trained in the care of trees and shrubs. This training can come from formal college education or years of experience.

How Do Trees Benefit Our Community?
We like trees around us because they make life more pleasant. Most of us respond to the presence of trees beyond simply observing their beauty. We feel serene, peaceful, restful and tranquil in a grove of trees. Even though trees may be private property, their size often makes them part of the community as well. City trees often serve several architectural and engineering functions. They provide privacy, emphasize views or screen out objectionable views. They reduce glare and reflection. They provide background, or soften, complement or enhance architecture.

What Are The Environmental Benefits of Trees?
Trees alter the environment in which we live by moderating climate, improving air quality, conserving water and harboring wildlife. Climate control is obtained by moderating the effects of sun, wind, and rain. We are cooler when we stand in the shade of trees and are not exposed to direct sunlight. In winter, we value the sun's radiant energy; and because of this, we should plant only small or deciduous trees on the south side of homes.

Temperature in the vicinity of trees is cooler than that away from trees. The larger the tree, the greater the cooling. By using trees in the cities, we are able to moderate the heat island effect caused by pavement and buildings in commercial areas.

By planting trees and shrubs, we return to a more natural, and less artificial environment. Birds and other wildlife are attracted to the area.

What Are the Economic Benefits of Planting Trees at Your Home?
Direct economic benefits are usually associated with energy costs. Air conditioning costs are lower in a tree shaded home. Heating costs are reduced when a home has a windbreak. Trees are a wise investment of funds since landscaped homes are more valuable than non-landscaped homes. The savings in energy costs and the increase in property value directly benefit each homeowner.
